My hands are drying out?

Why are my hands so dry?

I’m often asked by people ‘Why are my hands so dry? Before this Covid 19 pandemic no-one was washing their hands as frequently and certainly not for 20 seconds so many times a day. Nor were people using hand sanitiser which is high in alcohol and very drying to the skin.

However, there are ways you can improve this impact on your skin. Washing your hands in warm rather than very hot water can help. There is no need to use scalding water and in fact this can harm your skin. Studies have shown that washing your hands in cold water is as effective as hot water and hot water can aggravate skin conditions.

Washing your hands properly removes dirt, viruses and bacteria to stop them spreading to other people and objects. Follow the guidelines on the above link. Use hand sanitiser if out and about but swap to a moisturising soap once you can. Naturally handmade soaps are much less drying as they don’t use harsh chemicals and using the cold process method ensures glycerine is retained in the soap.

After you’ve washed your hands use some moisturises and rub in. This should help relive the dryness.
